West Lancashire to pay tribute to the fallen
Each year on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, every corner of our community comes together to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives serving our country.
For 2024, Remembrance Sunday falls on November 10 while Armistice Day will be held the following day on November 11.
Both days will feature public commemorative services across the Borough, with council representatives joining the Mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Julian Finch, to pay their respects.
Councillor Finch said: “This is a time for us to honour those who have given their lives for their country and to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen. They’re forever remembered, forever missed.
“As a result of their selflessness and bravery, we can benefit from the freedoms we have today.
“I invite everyone across the Borough to pause and pay their respects to those who have fought in conflict and those who continue to do so in 2024 and beyond.”

Remembrance Sunday services
ORMSKIRK
The Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Julian Finch and Mrs Mary Finch, Deputy Chief Executive, Chris Twomey, Martin Ainscough, Deputy Lieutenant, and Ashley Dalton MP (who will leave for Skelmersdale immediately after the first wreath laying Ceremony) to attend.
09.20 Parade assembles at St. Anne’s R.C. Church
09.30 Short service, SILENCE, Last Post, Laying of Wreaths, Reveille.
09.50 Parade will march off to the War Memorial in Coronation Park via Aughton Street LEFT into Park Avenue and into the rear entrance of Coronation Park and into the pedestrian only area. Short Service, SILENCE, Last Post, Laying of Wreaths, Reveille.
10.15 Parade will march to the Parish Church from Coronation Park emerging from Morrisons entrance and using the one-way road up to the Church. A salute will be taken on the way to the Parish Church.
10.40 Main Service of Remembrance inside the Parish Church, Last Post, Laying of Wreaths, Reveille.
11.45 After the service light refreshments will be available in the New Church House.
AUGHTON
12.15 The Parade assembles at the War Memorial in Granville Park for the Service of Remembrance.
BURSCOUGH
14.00 The Mayor, Councillor Julian Finch will attend a Remembrance Parade gathering at 1.15pm and the Parade commencing at 1.30pm from Lord Street, Burscough parading to the Memorial Garden. A short service will commence at 2.00pm following which the Parade will march back to Lord Street, Burscough at 2.45pm. Refreshments will be served at the Stanley Club, Burscough.
HALSALL
10.45 Service of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church at 10:30. Wreath Laying Ceremony at 10:45 followed by refreshments served at Memorial Hall, Recreation Ground, Halsall Road.
LATHOM
10.20 Lathom Parish Council is responsible for arrangements. The Parade assembles at Lathom Park War Memorial, Hall Lane for a Wreath Laying Ceremony at 10.20 which is followed by a Service of Remembrance in Lathom Park Chapel at 10.50am
SKELMERSDALE
11.00 The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress, Councillor Anne Fennell and Councillor Sarah Lawton accompanied by the Chief Legal and Democratic Services Officer, will join the Parade, which marches from Sandy Lane, Skelmersdale at 10.35, to the War Memorial in Sandy Lane for a Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony at 11.00. Refreshments will be available after the service at Wardens Club, 244 Blaguegate Lane, Lathom, Skelmersdale WN8 8TX.
UP HOLLAND
10.50 The Parade assembles at the War Memorial at Vicarage Corner for a 30-minute Wreath Laying Ceremony.
Most Churches in West Lancashire will be holding their own services and it is hoped that as many of you as possible will attend the service in your own Wards.
Armistice Day services
ORMSKIRK - CORONATION PARK
There will be a short service and a two-minute silence at the War Memorial in Coronation Park, Ormskirk.
Guests/the public are invited to gather from 10.45am. All are welcome.
The Mayor, Councillor Julian Finch and Mayoress, Mrs Mary Finch will be leading the Armistice Service.
HMS RINGTAIL MONUMENT, PIPPIN STREET, RINGTAIL RETAIL PARK
There will be a short service and a two-minute silence after which wreaths will be laid at the monument. Guests usually gather at around 10.30am on Monday 11 November. All are welcome. The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Anne Fennell and Deputy Mayoress, Councillor Sarah Lawton on this occasion will be laying a wreath on the Mayor's behalf.
