A motion regarding voter ID was passed at a meeting of Full Council on February 22 2023.
New government legislation states that from 4 May 2023, voters in England will need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections, including local elections.
Councillors were concerned that some people may be excluded from voting if they are not able to satisfy the requirements of the legislation or provide the appropriate ID. The Motion asked for the Council to seek to exercise their powers under the Sustainable Communities Act 2007 to make exempt from the legislation, everyone who wishes to vote within West Lancashire who would otherwise be unable to do so as a result of the change in legislation.
With this in mind, the Motion requested the Council to follow the requirements of the Sustainable Communities Regulations and consult with members of the public to seek their views as to whether or not an exemption should be applied for.
