Council takes steps towards delivery of two new Wellbeing and Leisure Hubs

  • West Lancashire Borough Council is taking action to support the development of new Wellbeing and Leisure Hubs in the Borough.
  • £3.188m of funding is being spent for the refurbishment of Burscough Wellbeing & Leisure Hub, which will be open to the public in early 2025.
  • The Council are looking to consult the residents of the Borough on the proposed review for Nye Bevan and Park Pool.

West Lancashire Borough Council is taking action to support the development of new Wellbeing and Leisure Hubs to replace the existing Nye Bevan and Park Pool centres, which are around 50 years old and at the end of their useful lives.

The Council remains committed to investment in its leisure facilities after approving £3.188m of funding for the refurbishment of Burscough Wellbeing & Leisure Hub, which is currently underway and will be open to the public in early 2025. The Council are also continuing the plans to build two new state-of-the-art leisure facilities within the Borough.

Council Leader, Councillor Yvonne Gagen said: “To be able to afford replacement centres for Nye Bevan and Park Pool it now seems an appropriate time to embrace new and innovate build methodologies, particularly in relation to swimming pools which are the most expensive part of the construction.”

The Council are reviewing options to commission above ground swimming pools. This option is more sustainable and economically viable, meaning the Council will be able to provide high quality leisure provisions which aren’t at the burden of the Council taxpayer.

The review of Council leisure centre facilities is part of a wider Council review to secure the financial future of West Lancashire Borough Council as the Council has seen a 92% cut in Revenue Support Grant funding from central Government.

Council Leader, Councillor Yvonne Gagen continued: “Tough decisions must be made to ensure we can deliver on our Council priorities and for the residents of the Borough. Which is why we intend to consult on the potential closure of Nye Bevan and Park Pool leisure centres as part of our plan for delivery of two new Wellbeing and Leisure Hubs within the Borough.

“We want to assure our residents that the future of wellbeing and leisure in West Lancashire is extremely important to us which is why we are looking to take essential steps now with the aim of providing a more secure, sustainable and economically viable leisure offer for our residents of West Lancashire.”
