Your Tenancy Agreement

Tenancy Agreements

The Council offers the following types of tenancy

Introductory Tenancy:

Everyone who has not held a social housing tenancy before being housed, will be given an Introductory Tenancy. This means that you have a 12 month trail period to show that you are meeting all the obligations of being a Council tenant. After this we will let you know whether your tenancy will move to a Secure Tenancy or in some cases, eg you have not kept up to date with rent payments, we may extend this trial period for a further 6 months.

There are limits to what you can do within the introductory period, for example you cannot:

  • make major improvements to the property
  • swap your property with another council tenant
  • apply to buy your property through the Right to Buy scheme

Secure Tenancy:

If you have moved from another social housing tenancy or you have successfully completed your Introductory tenancy you will be given a Secure Tenancy, this normally means that you can live at the property for the rest of your life as long as you do not break any of the conditions outlined in your tenancy agreement.

Rent To Buy Tenancy:

We have just introduced a new type of tenancy which is the Rent to Buy. Rent to Buy is an affordable home ownership product aimed at helping people who want to buy a home but are unable to save a deposit.  It allows eligible working households to rent a home at an Intermediate Rent providing them the opportunity to save for a deposit which may enable them to purchase their home in the future. After completion of the Introductory 12 month trial period, Rent to buy tenants will convert to a Fixed Term four year Flexible Tenancy.

We will make sure that all tenants are aware of their rights and responsibilities and offer continued support to help make sure your tenancy is a success.

You can view the terms and conditions of your tenancy here.
